Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Anti-Vibration System

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner

  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

MS 311 is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 217.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Saw I bought this saw after reading many reviews on the internet and talking to alot of different people. It has very good power and cuts better than any saw I have ever owned or used. The large chain makes quick work of larger trees and will even rip cut when necessary to split extremely large pieces in halves or quarters. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who cuts alot of wood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stihl MS311 I have put 4-5 tanks of fuel through this saw and so far, so good. Typical Stihl reliability. Starts easily, runs longer on a tank of fuel, and surprisingly light weight for a saw of its size. It handles a 25" bar without a problem. I also own an 026 that still runs like a dream. I would highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All Purpose Saw Purchased this saw to harvest firewood as I recently put a wood stove in my home. I had used a Stihl 015 for years as a young man and I love Stihl's reputation for durability and performance. This new MS311 has not disappointed me. I have already used this saw to help a friend remove over 30 trees from his property that were dead and needing to come down. The saw has performed flawlessly. The controls are easy to operate with gloves and the saw starts with a single pull. It does get a bit heavy by the end a day of cutting wood. Very pleased with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saw has great power Have a different brand of chain saw and the STIHL works circles around it! I am very impressed by the way that this chainsaw operates! I love the power that the saw has and the ease of handling it! Great chainsaw for the price! I would highly recommend this chainsaw to anyone that has trees that need to be cut! Love my STIHL MS 311 chainsaw!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hard Starting Been 20 years since my last Stihl. Bought this MS 311 from a local dealer. Took it home and could not start it. Used new pre-mix from the dealer. Dealer could not get is started either. They pulled the plug and claimed it was fouled. They finally got it to run after about ten minutes of effort. Took it home again and could not get it to start.in the garage. Finally realized this thing will not start cold. I have to take it out into the sun and let it "bake" for about 15 minutes before it will start. Outside temp was around 90 degrees. Once warm, it starts normally.. Looks like I'll have to rely on my "other" orange saw for the winter and use this Stihl in the summer only. I've used just about every brand of saw made over the last 40 years. This is the most difficult cold-start saw I've ever owned. Very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My MS311 died after a few hours of cutting I have been using chain saws for 35+ years, and I also have a MS250. After a few hours of cutting, my brand new MS311 died in the middle of a cut. I follow the recommendations on using the proper gas and fuel mix, and I also allow the saw to cool off after a 5 to 10 minutes of continuous cutting. Although my MS311 is only about 2 weeks old, the Stihl dealer said their shop needs to look at it to determine if it is in warranty. A very unsettling feeling for an owner of a new chain saw. It's been about 4 weeks since my MS311 is in the Stihl repair shop, I'm still waiting for them to tell me if this is an in warranty repair (no cost) or out of warranty diagnostic, (cost me more $ just for them to look at it).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's been in the shop most of the first month of ownership I had used the saw for less than 1 hour of operation when the tensioner broke and the chain fell off. It was all replaced under warranty but took a couple of weeks in the shop to get the work done. I'm in Texas and wanted to get through sawing up 3 trees I had taken down in April before it got too hot outside, but with the shop time it pushed work well into May and 90 degree days.I also hate trying to start this saw. I've got it down now but everytime I start it I wish it had a primer bulb and regular choke switch and a separate stop switch.I'm hoping that it's reliable from now on as I plan to take it out to our remote property and start taking trees down on 100+ acres of land later in the year.
